Art Market Talk | Mind the (Price) Gap - It is a Gender Thing

Art by women continues to be undervalued, as a study by researchers at the Luxembourg School of Finance revealed in 2017. In response to the under-representation of female artists, several institutions and galleries have organized women-only shows. While these exhibitions certainly allow for exposure and fill an art historical gap, do they have an actual impact on the market value of female artists? This panel aims to address this question by bringing together experts in the field. Have these shows impacted the prices of works by female artists? To what extend has the behavior of collectors towards female artists changed? And what else can be done to overcome the gender price gap?

Helene Winer, Co-founder, Metro Pictures, New York
Valeria Napoleone, Art Collector and Philanthropist, London
Candice Breitz, Artist, Berlin
Moderator: Jan Dalley, Arts Editor, Financial Times, London

Artworld Talk | Between Production and Reproduction - Career and Motherhood in the Artworld

Is the artworld compatible with parenting? According to 19th-century stereotypes, artists are obsessive, solitary, selfish characters. Two centuries later, how has this perception changed? With socially-oriented work, relational aesthetics, and care economies embedded into artistic practices, has the artworld finally made room for female artists and curators to be mothers, or is motherhood still considered 'the kiss of death' for a career? The participants in this panel – all of them mothers - will discuss their experiences and how they juggle their career and private lives.

Chus Martínez, Curator and Head of the Art Institute HGK FHNW, Basel
Coco Fusco, Artist, New York
Nadine Zeidler, Co-Founder, Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin
Moderator: Julieta Aranda, Artist, and Editor, e-flux Journal, Berlin/New York City

Artist Talk | Performance Beyond the Body - Ed Atkins, Jay Pather, RoseLee Goldberg and Kathy Noble

Since its emergence in the 1960s and more recently in the last ten years, performance in the art context has had a great effect on both the role of the viewer/participant and object/perception of the artwork. Given developments in the digital realm, such as animation and interactive software, relationships between the body and performer have taken major steps. What are the limitations of performative arts, if any? Can performance exist without a body?

Ed Atkins, Artist, Berlin; Jay Pather, Adjunct Curator for Performance, Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town; RoseLee Goldberg, Founding Director and Curator of Performa, New York

Moderator: Kathy Noble, Writer and Curator, London
