In EF_FEMININITY a gender-diverse ensemble of four performers examines the concepts of femininity, hyper-femininity and effeminacy. What is femininity? Who owns it? Which wishes, expectations and realities are connected to female identity? Whatever develops within children‘s play has to pass the strict eye of society and will be - according to the gender stencil – validated or condemned. When they were kids, Marcel Schwald and Chris Leuenberger wanted to be girls. Up to this day they are fascinated by the ways and wiles attributed to the female gender - especially when these behaviors are practiced as a means to self-empowerment and as a political statement.
In India, where gender identities beyond the binary, have a far-reaching history, they got in touch with the slam poet Shilok Mukkati, the performer Living Smile Vidya and the choreographer Diya Naidu - all activists fighting for the recognition of their femininities. On stage, accompanied by Chris Leuenberger, they embody their own experiences, their hopes and social realities.
